Altar of Xi'orhki, God of Equilibrium (2017)
As our collective actions continue to affect the planet, it compensates to achieve its own climactic balance and equilibrium. So we get events such as mass extinctions, rising sea levels, and frequent and violent climate phenomena.
The god of equilibrium is borne out of feelings of powerlessness and a questioning of my faith in humanity. If Faith is all we need, then we need a dedicated god. Altar of Xi’orhki, God of Equilibrium is both a commentary on and a critique of the return to mysticism or religion when something seems insurmountable.
Borrowing from Eastern religions, the work invites the viewer to light incense as an offering to Xi’orhki. It provokes the question: in the face of uncertain times and an increasingly volatile reality, do I pray or do I act?
