Somewhere Out There, 2014
This work contemplates the material economy where consumers are led to believe they are to blame for sweatshop conditions for demanding ever lower prices. Paying more for our goods does not guarantee better working conditions or more pay for workers, however. Most of the costs of production are ‘externalised’ in order for companies to continue raising profits while keeping customers happy. This means that along the system of extraction, production, and distribution of products, other people and other environments are paying the true costs. Advertising keeps us focused on consuming while the media, in general, hides the rest of the system so we only see the products that they say will improve our lives.
